| Description: |
Felix Mendelssohn’s famous and breathtaking oratorio brings to life the dramatic biblical story of the prophet Elijah. Written for the 1846 Birmingham Music Festival and hailed as a triumph, this masterpiece remains as popular today - in fact it was performed as the closing concert for the 2025 Edinburgh Festival at the Usher Hall. The score combines Baroque grandeur with lush Romantic orchestration, and is packed with thrilling choruses, lyrical solos and dramatic orchestral passages, building to a fiery climax with Elijah’s ascent to heaven in a flaming chariot.
With the Sussex Concert Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Roberts, and soloists Peter Grevatt (baritone), Kristian Thorkildsen (tenor), Louisa Hunter-Bradley (mezzo-soprano) & Kristy Swift (soprano).
